The Vision Splendid
by Stephanie Owen Reeder Author
Take a trip back in time and see Australia and New Zealand through the eyes of 22 nineteenth-century artists who portrayed both town and country life and landscapes in their sketchbooks. Held in the National Library of Australia, these sketchbooks give us a glimpse into a world where horses were the main mode of travel, 'homesteads' were often nothing more than cottages or bark-slab juts and farming was backbreaking physical work. These sketches not only provide engaging insights into the colonial world but also reveal the challenge of depicting natural environments so different from those in Europe.
