American Tall Tales
by Mary Pope Osborne Author
Meet America's first folk heroes in these wildly exaggerated and downright funny stories. In the tradition of the original 19th-century storytellers, Mary Pope Osborne combines, edits, and adds her own two cents worth -- and also supplies fascinating historical headnotes.

We have been reading these stories together as part of our American history study for DD age 8, and they have contributed a great deal to geography as well. They are a little long for the littlest kids, but my DS age 4 now pretends to be Babe the blue ox, so I guess it did make an impression on him as well LOL.
The woodcut illustrations are lovely.
