Brother's Keeper [SCM]
by Julie Lee Author
A gripping narrative about the Korean War. When 12-year-old Sora's family decides to flee from North Korean and escape the communist regime, Sora ends up traveling alone with her brother. The novel offers a realistic but not sensationalized look at war-time refugees and the challenges and dangers they often face. A look at Korean culture is interwoven throughout the story. (Note: Though the publisher recommends this book for grades 4–6, SCM recommends it for grades 7–9 due to some descriptions and intense situations. Some comments in chapter 1 [about the main character's physical development] may not be appropriate for boys to read.)
