The third of Scott's "metrical romances," this work in rhyme is founded on the history of the struggle between King James V and the powerful clan Douglas. Though it varies somewhat from the facts (as most historical novels do), it was intended to be true in the main to the manners and customers of the ancient Highlanders of Scotland.
