March Toward the Thunder

by Joseph Bruchac Author

One young man's account of his time fighting for the Union in the Civil War. The main character, Louis, is a Native American who fights in an Irish Brigade, meets influential men and women of that era, and makes friends with a former slave who has joined a USCT regiment. A multiethnic and gentler treatment of the war than The Red Badge of Courage. Based on the experiences of the author's great-grandfather. Parent Note: Since Louis knows three languages (French, English, and Abenaki), he refers to God in all three at different times throughout the story. Most references to God are reverent; only a couple of exclamations by other characters might be considered swearing.
