This title in the Dear America series traces a year in the life of Nellie Lee and her family as they move from a small town in Tennessee to Chicago. It captures the struggles and growth in Nellie's own heart as she deals with being fairer skinned than her beloved sister. It also does a good job of depicting the racial tensions and issues of the day in 1919, in both the south and the north, in a manner that is suitable for older elementary children and captivating for all ages.
