Clotee learns how to read and write by listening to the lessons in the Big House as she waves the fan to keep the students cool. Each new word she learns to write conjures up a picture in her mind, except for the word "freedom." As her story unfolds, she eventually learns what freedom means. The Epilogue gives fascinating details about the rest of Clotee's life as well as other characters in this book that is based on a real story.
