An in-depth living biography of George Washington that sheds light on colonial times, the Revolutionary War, the challenges the new government faced, the personalities of the founding fathers, the beginning of political parties, the long-standing divide between north and south over slavery, the wider story of Lafayette, as well as the outstanding character and human frailties of "the father of our country." The author does a wonderful job of covering Washington's sometimes-conflicting mindsets as a slaveholder who desired gradual abolition. Excellent book.
