Good Resource

Reviewed by Parent/Teacher

I love the concept of this book, and at first glance it is in line with Charlotte Mason's emphasis in letting children get to know the people of history. The preface to this book says "This is a book about people. ...It is a book that might inspire you to a little organized day-dreaming, as you think about what it might be like to be Marguerite de Roberval, cast away by a cruel uncle, or Muquinna, facing strangers as alien and powerful as beings from outer space." You can see that the authors' intentions with it were excellent.
I also love the organization by time period and the wide variety characters included in each period. Many women are included, as well as Native Canadians. This book is not dominated by white males.
However, the actual chapters are not evenly well-written, and I can't recommend it in its entirety as a Canadian history spine. Some chapters are fine, but many others consist of choppy facts.
Still, I recommend this book as a valuable resource for parents. The short chapters on each character will give you a very good idea of who you would like to find out more about and find living books on. In many ways we are starting from scratch as we find living books for Canadian history. This book could prove an excellent starting point.
